Weekly Market Comment – August 26th 2019
Over the last month volatility has returned to markets, due to fears of an imminent recession. Last week saw this trend continue. Equity markets were on track for gains but an escalation in the US – China trade dispute on Friday caused weekly losses. China announced new tariffs on $75bn in US imports; this caused President Trump to fire back, tweeting “Our great American companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China”. Over the next hour the S&P 500 fell 2%. It was the fourth consecutive weekly loss for US markets.
